CONNECT

Use these easy-to-follow instructions to introduce yourself to POCs at companies on your Top 10 List.

1. Introduce Yourself to POCs

Now here’s the most important part of this process. You’ll need to reach out to your POCs to present the extremely valuable opportunity: the chance for their companies to add a highly talented military service member (you) to their team.

Remember, you have enormous leverage, and here’s the best part: that company does not have to pay your salary or benefits for the duration of your spill route. That’s going to save them roughly $10,000 to $20,000, even after paying our nominal sponsorship fee. Even better, they get to evaluate you in action before deciding if they want to hire you as a permanent W-2 employee. You’re offering them a try-before-you-buy scenario. They can now make smarter hiring decisions and eliminate their financial risk.

It’s truly an amazing program for you and for them.

So, you’ve got four ways you can approach your POCs: stop by their office, call them on the phone, email, or send them a link to the message.

We have placed Skillbridge interns at some amazing companies like the San Diego Padres, Amazon’s Blue Origin, the Memphis Grizzlies, Lionsgate Studios, Lockheed Martin, rap artists, equestrian therapy centers, tech and cyber companies, music producers, you name it.

Hundreds of other Skillbridge members have successfully found an exciting position, and you can too.

This is not going to be easy, but who cares if it helps you launch a rewarding and lucrative career? You have to just go for it and don’t give up until you reach every POC on your list. Keep your eye on the prize.

Remember, there are 200,000 service members who leave the military every year. They are all eligible for Skillbridge, and the competition for positions at the big-name Skillbridge providers—Facebook, Amazon, Raytheon, Home Depot, Wells Fargo, all the companies everyone knows—is fierce. If, however, you take this advice and you help us identify your own company, and not one of those big ones that everyone applies to, you will really stand out and increase your odds for a great outcome.

Let’s get it done.

Follow the steps below to promote yourself to POCs on your Target List

Email Outreach

Use your personal email address.

Write a personalized “Subject” line that will get opened: (POC FIRST NAME) – (POC’s COMPANY NAME) / (YOUR FULL NAME) (YOUR BRANCH).

Example: Jerry – Alpine Industries / Billy Green (US Marine)

Copy and paste this email template. Always double-check all the merges before hitting Send.

I’m (YOUR FULL NAME), an active duty service member in the (YOUR BRANCH).

Additionally, you’ll have the unique opportunity to evaluate my performance before deciding whether to offer me a permanent position as a W2 employee after the SkillBridge program.

This risk-free evaluation period allows you to make an informed decision about your next great hire.

Here are some ideas for different responses you can use. Determine which one is most appropriate. You may need to combine content from different messages. Go slow so you don’t overwhelm the POC!

Step 1 — Write a custom response that ALWAYS ends with a request to schedule a call.

Step 2 — Schedule a Zoom call so the POC can see you. If that’s not possible, do it over the phone.

Step 3 — During the call, highlight your unique character traits and skill sets that make you a valuable team member. This is your chance to shine and show why you’re the best fit for the role. Ask insightful questions about the company to determine if it aligns with your values and goals.

Step 4 — Introduce your 7 Eagle Group Manager and let him/her lock it up for you

I have extensive military experience as a (CIVILIAN JOB TITLE). During the last (YEARS) I’ve become one of the best in my unit at (DESCRIBE YOUR SKILL SETS AS IT APPLIES TO THIS COMPANY). Sending emails to your POCs is a quick and easy process that can be completed in just a few minutes per email.

Start by reviewing the emails our research team has found for each of your POCs. Feel free to add or edit any addresses as needed.

Many of the emails we found may be general company addresses – for example, they start with info@, support@, or sales@.  You may want to do your own additional research to find personal email addresses for each POC.

Here are some tips to help you do so.  Visit the company website to see if they have a Leadership Team page.  Check the POC’s LinkedIn profile and click “Contact Info”.  Google search the POC’s full name, company name, and email address, Example, “Jim Smith Apollo Tech email address”).

Once you have the best list of addresses possible, send your emails one at a time, following the suggestions on this page. Personalizing each message is crucial—never copy and paste the same message to every POC, as it will likely be deleted. Instead, add the POC’s name, company name, and location to show that you’ve put thought into your message. This will greatly increase the chances of your email being read.

Take your time with this step and always proofread your message before hitting the Send button. The key to success is to go slow and not rush the process. The hardest part is getting the conversation started, but once you get a response from the POC, it will be easier.

For maximum impact, we recommend using our carefully crafted email scripts, which have been proven to generate responses. While putting your own spin on things may be tempting, we’ve carefully chosen each word and phrase to achieve the best possible results. Trust in our expertise and use the scripts as written to get the most out of your outreach efforts.

LinkedIn Outreach

Get a free Premium LinkedIn account if you don’t have one. This is important because it allows you to send longer “Connect” messages.

Load a smiling headshot and your resume to your profile. Make sure to include details of your military experiences.

Get a free account on ChatGPT.com if you need help writing or improving your resume.

“Connect” with each POC on the list. LinkedIn allows around 20 requests/day.

Go to each POC’s LinkedIn profile. Find the “Connect” button or link. It may be listed under “More.” Edit, copy, and paste this Custom Note. The merges personalize your message so it gets read. Double-check merges are correct before sending it.

Hi (POC FIRST NAME), I’m exiting the (YOUR MILITARY BRANCH) and available to spend 3 mos working F/T for a (COMPANY’S HOME CITY) company getting civilian experience. (POC’S COMPANY) is at the top of my list. Could you use another pro on your team? The military even pays my full salary!

Hi (POC FIRST NAME), I’m exiting the (YOUR MILITARY BRANCH) and would love to spend 3 mos working F/T for (POC’S COMPANY)? The military even pays my full salary! Can we discuss this?

Use the suggested responses under the “Email” section above when you get a bite.

You can also attach the printed flyer and Email it. Click Here to download a copy of the flyer.

As the world’s leading professional network, LinkedIn is a powerful tool that can significantly contribute to your career success.

By creating a strong profile page that effectively showcases your skills and experience, you are taking a proactive step toward connecting with potential employers.

Don’t forget to take advantage of LinkedIn’s free Premium plan for military personnel, which offers extended ‘Connect’ messages and advanced search features.

Start by completing the basic profile requirements to establish a solid online presence. This will undoubtedly make a great first impression when your POCs view your profile.

As most hiring managers are civilians, tailor your profile to showcase your transferable skills and experience in a way that’s easy for them to understand.

Avoid military jargon and focus on your leadership skills, exemplary work ethic, and relevant experience. Upload a professional headshot with a friendly smile, wearing business attire. Choose a background image related to your desired career field. Use ChatGPT to craft a compelling Title and About section highlighting your strengths and career goals.

Include your cell number and personal email address in the Contact Info section so it’s easy for POCs to contact you. Connect with at least 25 friends and family members to demonstrate your relevance. Upload your resume in the Experience section, and use ChatGPT for suggestions if needed.

Now that you’ve built a strong profile, it’s time to send LinkedIn ‘Connect’ messages to your POCs.

Remember, personalization is key. Take the same approach as you would with emails: go slow, personalize each message, and proofread before sending. Use our suggested scripts on this page, which are based on over 10 years of experience and proven to work. Please avoid the temptation to write your own.

Feel free to reach out to additional contacts you spot at your target companies beyond the two POCs listed.  The more hiring authorities who hear from you, the better chance you’ll have of landing a position.

Phone Outreach

Here is a sample phone script you can use. It contains a lot of information, so always have a copy handy.

Hi (POC FIRST NAME) — My name is (YOUR FULL NAME), an active duty service member in the (YOUR BRANCH).

Is this a bad time?

(If “”yes,”” schedule a better time and add it to your calendar).

I’m getting ready to leave the military, and I’m participating in an amazing OJT program that not only allows me to spend 3 months working full-time for a (POC’s HOME CITY) company, but also provides me with civilian experience, all while the military continues to pay my full salary.

(POC’S COMPANY) is at the top of my list! Could you use another “squared-away” pro on your team? You’ll save around $15,000.

Let me tell you more about the program. It’s called SkillBridge — a Department of Defense On-the-Job Training initiative.

The goal is to help service members like me transition into civilian careers while providing your company with a highly talented, dedicated, and hard-working team member.

You’ll also have the unique opportunity to evaluate my performance before deciding whether to offer me a permanent position as a W2 employee after the SkillBridge program. It’s a risk-free way to find your next great hire.

I am being sponsored by 7 Eagle Group, and the next step would be for me to introduce you to them so they can answer all of your questions and schedule an interview with me if you’re interested.”

If the POC replies YES or is interested in discussing this, introduce your 7 Eagle Manager, and we’ll lock it up. It’s okay to meet the POC first on Zoom or a phone call. You can also forward your resume if he/she asks for it.

Hi (POC FIRST). My name is (YOUR FULL NAME). I’m getting ready to exit the (YOUR BRANCH). I’m participating in an amazing OJT program that not only allows me to spend 3 months working full-time for a (POC’s HOME CITY) company but also provides me with civilian experience, all while the military continues to pay my full salary.

(POC’S COMPANY) is at the top of my list! Could you use another “squared-away” pro on your team? You’ll save around $15,000.

I’d love to discuss this with you. My phone number is (YOUR PHONE #… SPEAK SLOWLY). I look forward to meeting you and truly appreciate your support of our country’s military Veterans.

You can land a SkillBridge spot with a straightforward phone call! No need to hesitate – these calls are within everyone’s reach, and our foolproof scripts are here to support you. If you could use a confidence boost, your dedicated 7 Eagle Group Manager is ready to practice with you.

Remember, about 80% of business executives won’t answer your call, so leaving a voicemail message is a breeze.

Smile while you talk—it’ll make you sound enthusiastic and excited about the opportunity! Standing up during calls can also help you feel more confident and energetic.

Be polite, professional, and friendly, just like chatting with a friend. And don’t worry, the higher-ups are often the nicest people to deal with! If your POC doesn’t respond to your initial voicemail, it’s okay to try again – they’ll admire your persistence.

If you’re having trouble reaching a POC, try contacting someone in a different department and ask for help. Most people are happy to assist if you ask nicely.

Keep in mind, what you’re offering POCs is incredibly valuable – they have the opportunity to make a strategic hiring decision, save around $15,000, and support a local service member. So, don’t hesitate, make those calls, and unlock your SkillBridge opportunity!

In Person Outreach

The best results are obtained by showing up at offices where you want to SkillBridge and asking to speak to a hiring manager.

Wear professional attire so you look sharp.

Bring a printed copy of the Flyer so you can leave it behind. Click Here to download a copy of the flyer.

Use the same talking points featured in the Phone section above.

If you currently live in the same city where you’ll complete your SkillBridge, consider visiting potential companies in person.

It’s an extremely effective strategy to get hired fast! In-person visits demonstrate confidence, enthusiasm, and a willingness to go the extra mile. Here are some other powerful reasons why this makes a lot of sense. Meeting in person allows for a more personal connection and building rapport and trust with the hiring manager or decision-maker.

They show enthusiasm and initiative, demonstrating your eagerness to secure a position. Body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice convey confidence and professionalism, making a stronger impression than phone calls or emails. In a competitive job market, an in-person visit can differentiate you from other applicants and showcase your proactive approach.

Finally, it leaves a lasting impression, making you more memorable to the hiring team.

Print out a stack of the attached flyers and leave one behind for each person you meet.

2. Improve Your Resume

Writing or improving your resume can be a daunting task, but with ChatGPT it is easier than ever before. You don’t need to pay for an expensive resume service or spend hours trying to come up with the perfect wording. ChatGPT does all the hard work for you. It’s free and will generate a tailored resume based on your prompts in seconds.

Two other sites we recommend are Best Military Resume and Career Flow. So, please take time now and experiment with one of these AI sites if you haven’t done so yet. You will be absolutely floored at how fast you can create a resume that powerfully promotes your accomplishments and helps you stand out. Remember, a well-written resume will attract attention from hiring managers, and that’s what you need to land a job interview.

Start with asking ChatGPT to write one section at a time. Use a prompt like “write a resume objective summary” and then enter the details you want your summary to include, like your branch, your MOS, your top character traits and skills, awards you’ve won, specific results you’ve achieved, and promotions.

Here’s an example:
“I opened ChatGPT and wrote a prompt at the bottom: ‘Write an objective for me. I am seeking a position as an aircraft mechanic in the aviation industry. I served for 10 years in the Air Force as a flight mechanic for fighter jets. My top character traits and skills include attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork. I received an Air Force Achievement Medal for outstanding performance and was promoted to Senior Airman within three years of service. I have a top secret clearance.'”

Hit the enter button. Look at this—in seconds it produces a well-written summary that you can copy and edit to suit your needs. Want to see other options? Click this button right here and it will produce additional options. You can just keep doing that. Still not happy? Just enter a different prompt at the start of this and it’ll give you different versions.

Next, ask ChatGPT to write the entire section in bullet form for your most current military experience. Here’s an example:
“Write a resume section for a Master Sergeant who served as a Tactical Air Maintenance Specialist in the US Air Force.” Hit the enter and voila. It might not be perfect, but I bet it’s pretty close. You’ll still need to edit the text for your specific situation.

Repeat this for every past job you’ve held that you want to include in your work experience section, and then prompt it to write your education section. You can also use ChatGPT to write cover letters and interview thank you notes. It is an amazing and addicting tool.

So give ChatGPT a try today and take the first step toward landing your dream job. Creating a professional resume has never been easier. And by the way, I wrote the entire script for this instructional video on—you guessed it—ChatGPT.

3. Prepare for Interviews

With a little practice, you can improve your interviewing skills dramatically, make a great impression, and substantially increase your odds of getting hired.
